Midautumn fun @ the library

Some weeks ago, I was the library when I caught sight of a special booth set up at the library for the mid autumn festival. All you had to do was guess at least 3 answers correctly to eight riddles (some in Mandarin and others in English) to win free prizes. Anyone who takes part will win the prize (i.e. no lucky draw).

Naturally I participated, especially since I don't have to read like 48 books like the other misguided time (to only win a S$5 ticket to the Maritime Experiential museum, which was a total bust itself). I asked my friend to take part, but he didn't want to. So I filled out one for B1 and for myself. 

So today, the library smsed me to tell me I won. Strangely they didn't contact B1, but when I checked at the counter, they did have his name on the winning list as well. So we collected our presents, which was a black bag containing a pen, a spiral book (which you can write on - it will be my German composition book) and a towel. Much better than some other libraries that require you to visit the libraries in the area to win the same thing.

The librarian was so thoughtful, she actually bothered to give us stuff that are gender specific, like I got the free spiral book with a peach colored towel, and B1, the plain grey one with a blue towel. I am also quite impressed by my own restraint, given how kiasu (scared of losing) I am, it was amazing I did not submit for my 9族18代.

On the other hand, because I hadn't gone to my favorite Bishan library for a while, I totally missed out on the opportunity to attend a free workshop on acrylic painting on canvas. Today when I noticed it, it was too late, the workshop had been oversubscribed. So sad. Free paint provided to allow you to paint at the workshop itself and a real expert to teach you... *sobs*

The "Stick Them Up" Dog near my violin class

It's not always that I get to see the dog which loves to pop its head out of the window. Quite freaky when you don't expect to see a dog that looks like a toy turn its head towards you. Especially when the window is about 1.5m above the floor.

The First Sight of Fortune

Went to watch the latest Casual Concert at the Esplanade this evening. I felt that the first piece of the 2nd set, i.e. Schindler's List Theme, was played the best. Chan Yoong Han did an excellent job *applauds*. Perhaps his excellent rapport with the orchestra has to do with the fact that he plays with the SSO professionally. At least he didn't make me cringe like that Yong Siew Toh student did the other time.

Anyway, what was intriguing was when we came out of the concert hall and encountered this window scene.

God of Fortune hanging out at the Singapore River. Now this is not a commonplace sight. Haha. Everyone had fun taking photos with him, especially that family to the foreground of this photo. I had to wait for every single member of that family, excluding daddy, taking group and individual shots with God of Fortune, before I could get this shot. Anyway the guy was so tanned, he looked more like Judge Bao, commented Town Mouse.

How to commit suicide with your lover and not die

A 50yr old Shanghai man leapt from his 6-floor apartment clutching his young lover. Eyewitnesses said they heard a loud bang, like a tyre exploding. Upon approaching the unconscious man, they were freaked out because they could not see his lover whom he landed on, just some hair and a pile of woman's clothes.

They belatedly realised that it was a sex doll. The man had been a widower for some years, raising his son on his own. Now that his son was studying overseas, the man felt that he was growing older and very lonely. He didn't want to be a burden to his son, so he jumped.

Poor thing, but don't worry, he survived. Now he will die of humiliation instead.

While searching for my S$15 book, City Mouse managed to find me a S$5.95 German children book at Kinokuniya. *Jaw Drop*

Fantastic. Anyway in a bid to encourage everyone to learn languages, here is a link to Goethe's Book2 website which supposedly lets you download 100 mp3s per language? But you have to buy the complementary books.

Why borrowing (& of course reading) books is good for you

Hoho, guess what?

Last Sunday I came across the lucky draw booth while borrowing books at my usual library hangout. The prize: two tickets to a Da:ns Festival 2009 performance. All I needed to do was provide a receipt for 6 borrowed items, my particulars and the name of a group or individual involved in the event.

Well, I didn't win tickets to watch Paloma Herrera, but I did win this!!! I was positively ecstatic when I received the call from the library.

This makes the second time I won something from the libraries. Yeah! And from the same library!
